Farmacias vs Parafarmacias: What's the Difference?
Farmacia (Pharmacy)
- These are full-service pharmacies run by licensed pharmacists.
- They dispense prescription medications.
- They also sell over-the-counter medicines and health products.
- Look out for the green cross sign – that’s how you’ll spot them.
Parafarmacia or Pharma
- These are more like health and beauty stores.
- They don’t dispense prescription medications.
- They sell herbal remdies, vitamins, cosmetics, and personal care products.
- You’ll may occasionally find a small selection in larger supermarkets or more likely as standalone stores.
Finding Farmacias and Their Opening Times.
Farmacias in Spain operate on a rotation system for after-hours and holiday coverage. To find the nearest open farmacia:
- Check the lists posted on Farmacia doors.
- Look in local newspapers.
- Use apps and website like “Farmacias de Guardia” This image is a screenshot from this site.
Typical hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 2 PM and 5 PM to 9:30 PM, and Saturday mornings. It’s always best to double-check, as times can vary.
Public Health Centers (Centros de Salud) in Lanzarote
Lanzarote has several public health centres you can use with your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Here’s a list of the main ones:
